Computers are powerful and resourceful machines, and any of your computer’s parts or programs can be the source of a problem. Fortunately, many of the computer problems you may run into have simple solutions, and you can save a lot of time, energy, and money by learning how to recognize these problems without the help of a professional computer tech – with the exception that you know exactly what you are doing.

The list below is the top three most common computer problems:

Blue Screen of Death on Laptop

Computer Freezing Up. There are a number of things that can lead to this problem, and some are more simply solved than others. If your computer keeps freezing up on you, then you can troubleshoot by rebooting, running a virus and malware scan, cleaning your registry (using a registry cleaning program such as Uniblue’s SpeedUpMyPC), searching for (and deleting, if applicable) spyware and adware, and repairing corrupted files. It may even be that your computer has insufficient RAM (Random Access Memory) for running all of your programs, so you can add more memory to your computer to help eliminate this problem.

PC Running Slow. Many times, a slow-running computer can be addressed by following a number of steps, all of which lead to optimizing its performance. Increasing your computer’s memory can greatly improve its speed; do this by uninstalling any programs that you don’t use, clearing the caches of all your software, getting rid of desktop icons and items that you don’t need, deleting temporary files, and even purchasing/adding more RAM. Also, be sure to scan your computer for viruses and malicious programs (spyware, rootkits, trojan horses, and adware, for example), as these can drastically slow your computer’s performance.

Blue Screen of Death. Also referred to as BSOD, this problem is actually a STOP error – meaning your computer must stop responding in order to preserve your valuable data. In order to do this, your computer will take a crash (called a crash dump) by shutting itself down. There are many causes for the blue screen of death, so pay close attention to the specific details of the error message; you can relay that message to a computer repair tech, who can then solve the problem and restore your computer to standard functionality.
